Research and Product Specialist - Job Description

Research and Product Specialist

About Boring Money

We're better known for our consumer website and commentary in the press. But behind the scenes there's a (small) army of data bods, market researchers and content producers all working to share our customer insights with an industry that struggles to really understand the end customer. Have a look at our business website

The Gig

You will focus on our qualitative and quantitative research and help us to find clients, to work out what projects will deliver value to whom, to manage the accounts and to roll your sleeves up and help shape the research. It is a sales role in part but it’s not the old-fashioned “let’s have a bottle of wine with my old school mates and shove stuff out of the door” sales person we want1. We want someone who gets research. Who loves data. And who wants to help our clients.

This is largely an outward facing role. We want you to know the industry. To understand the issues. And to help work out good solutions which will deliver brilliant value and insights to our customers. And then you’ll sell them! This role requires someone with research experience in the investments industry, someone with a ‘black book’ and someone who can help to tell our story externally, whilst feeding back internally to keep us fresh, honest and relevant!

The role will report into Holly Mackay, our CEO. This is a hybrid research and business development role. We do have some flexibility in scope, depending on the individuals we meet. This is London-based and the right person will be able to work in London for at least 4 days a week.

What we’ll ask you to do:

  • Talk to the industry, identify new opportunities and drum up new business

  • Help review the data and insights we get from investment platforms and robo advisers to understand what customers are doing with their money

  • Assist with the build and rollout of our new data product

  • Assist and help with the writing and research of new reports

  • Take ownership of new opportunities from inception through to execution.

  • Talk to the industry and the investment houses and providers about what challenges they have – and how an independent, consumer-focussed aggregator like us can help

  • Think like an entrepreneur.

  • Take ownership and get s*** done.

  • Solve problems and identify potential opportunities

  • Help create our portfolio of events to deliver relevant and interesting content to the industry

  • Be a bridge between our marketing team and our research team

We think you’ll need:

  • Competitive nature – you are fed up with boring complacent turgid products and comms

  • Ambition - we’re a small business – you carve out your opportunities

  • At the risk of sounding like Tinder, a good sense of humour and to be sociable

  • Energy, intelligence, numeracy skills, curiosity, creativity and good written and oral communication

  • An outgoing nature – this job is about being connected and talking to people

  • Honesty and backbone – not just saying things because someone is a client or because you want to ‘be nice’ – be fair but above all be honest

  • Knowledge or experience of the UK retail investment market: platforms, asset management, robo advice

  • Experience of researching or consulting within financial services

  • Confident with writing reports and presenting research findings to senior audiences

  • A genuine interest in fintech and data

  • Sell our research and data services

  • Help transform complex sources of information into marketable research reports for a specialist audience

  • Working with the research team

  • Conducting quantitative and qualitative data gathering exercises

  • Work with customer feedback to scope out and help deliver relevant and meaningful research projects

  • Write and carry out generally well-prepared marketing exercises and share our insights externally

Skills & Qualities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts in relatable, simple terms

  • Efficient, well organised and structured approach to problem-solving

  • Experience in gathering and analysing information, drawing conclusions, validating those conclusions and effectively presenting results

  • Interact confidently with many different types of stakeholders, including senior client stakeholders, on a project-by-project basis

  • Be fascinated in working with data sets but also with good old-fashioned human beings to develop a better understanding of what customers actually want

  • A humble belief that data is only useful when you turn it into insights

  • Have a keen desire to make investing less baffling and gobbledygooky for consumers

  • Bachelor’s degree or similar, ideally with a focus on one of the following areas: English literature, journalism, business, economics, finance or Maths - But given that our CEO did Medieval French, we won’t hold you to that.

  • Over 5 years+ in the investments industry
